Educational enrichment opportunities are growing in popularity, and we have noticed a trend towards offering a 60-minute class. This trend provides us with the perfect opportunity to explain why our after-school enrichment programs are 90 minutes in length.

We use a six-step design process that allows the students to ask, brainstorm, design, build, test, and improve. This is a model that not only applies to our engineering lessons, it applies to every problem the students will ever approach. Offering 60-minute classes would require that the process be shortened or altered. The most significant part of our class occurs in the last 30 minutes when the students re-engineer, retest, and improve on their original design.  This is where the students focus on developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills. It’s where students develop the confidence to realize that they can be successful in anything they do.
